Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are coiled springs that provide torsional force along a moment arm or store rotational energy. They are normally mounted around a rod or shaft and must be supported at three or more points.

Properly designed torsion springs are loaded in the direction that causes the body diameter to contract and the body length to expand, as the residual forming stresses are favorable in this orientation, thus maximizing spring life.

Common types of torsion springs are single, double, and spiral in shape. Application environment, necessary torque, and available space are all factors used to determine which type of torsion spring will provide the best solution for your application.

Various end configurations are available to provide the necessary mounting. However, applications that may require sharply bent ends, with greater stress than the coil body, can produce limited performance. In these situations our engineers work to decrease the radius of curvature to provide more favorable stress on the torsion arms.
